House, Edinburgh |
NEW
REGISTER HOUSE, EDINBURGH
The main building of the General Register Office
for Scotland is located close to the east end of Edinburgh's
world famous Princes Street. It was designed by Robert
Matheson, the Clerk of Works at the Office of Her
Majesty's Works in Scotland and was first
occupied in 1861. At the time Robert Matheson was also
responsible for Government buildings and also designed
Edinburgh's former General Post Office building nearby.
It is within H.M. New Register House that the majority of

THE
VILLAGE OF BRACO, PERTHSHIRE
Forty miles from Glasgow, fifty
two miles from Edinburgh, and only twelve miles from Stirling,
Braco nestles in the rolling hills of Scotland's scenic south west
Perthshire.
A quiet country village of approx 580 inhabitants (based on 2004
figures) it was here nearly 2000 years ago that the Romans built a number of forts,
including Ardoch at Braco, the ruins of which lie within a hilly wooded
area less than a mile from
Braco Main Street.
These forts were connected by a line of watchtowers and fortlets
across the southern edge of Perthshire and were constructed some
forty years before Hadrian's Wall.
Ardoch was one of the largest Roman fortifications ever built in Britain.
Today, hidden by woodland, the grass covered hillside ramparts and ditches
are all that remain of this once fine example of Roman fort building. |

GENEALOGY; A
BRIEF EXPLANATION
Genealogy
is the study of family history. It originated as an oral
tradition, the ancestry of important members of society
(especially sovereigns) being memorized by a priest or bard.
Later these lists of ancestors were written down, as in the
Bible. Since the 16th century records of family descent have
been strictly kept in many countries, so that most people in
Western Europe if they wished could trace their ancestry, either
through their own efforts, or by commissioning a genealogical
research specialist, such as TBIS Genealogy Services. A
chart showing genealogical descent is a pedigree; this
may be crucial in establishing a matter of inheritance. In
countries where wealth and position were commonly inherited,
such as here in Scotland, genealogy has been very important; but
even in countries where the legal and social reasons for
interest in genealogy are fewer, such as the USA and Australia,
many individuals still attempt to trace their family tree. Although
rewarding, research can be very time consuming and is usually
best carried out by an experienced genealogy researcher. |
